PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Life Outside the Studio
Chapman's love for creating is deeply rooted in his appreciation for the natural world. He lives in Southern California with his wife, Hannah, and their four children, where they enjoy spending time at the beach, surfing, and hiking local nature spots. At home, Chapman can often be found in his backyard studio, throwing pots on his wheel, or outdoors with his sons, painting and gardening as a family. Over the years, Chapman has cultivated a distinct artistic voice, producing an impressive body of work centered on family, as well as striking landscapes and still lifes.

TEACHING PHILOSPHY
Why Learning with Chapman is Different
My main goal through teaching art is to help my students fall in love with creating, to give them tools to set them up for success, and to push them to grow in their technique and skills. I value both an academic, disciplined attitude; working hard, pushing yourself, and following the tried and true methods of classical representation whilst also embracing the more creative side of art: letting go, enjoying the process, and making room for personal expression.
TEACHING APPROACH
Chapman's Teaching Method
Foundation Building – Helps students gain a strong foundation in their medium (drawing, painting, or sculpture)
Individual Development – Focuses on helping students develop their unique style and creative process
Thorough Instruction – Explains concepts and assignments thoroughly; demonstrates techniques and approaches
Individual Feedback – Provides personalized feedback, explaining where students are succeeding and where they need improvement
Student-Centered – Asks students questions to understand their goals rather than imposing his own approach
Art History Integration – Leads students in studies of particular artworks, copying masters closely to understand their techniques
